Office Insurance
Office Insurance provides a range of cover:
- Accidental damage cover on office buildings and/or contents, including theft; fire; lightning; explosion; aircraft; impact by vehicles, animals or falling trees; riot and civil commotion; malicious damage or vandalism; storm; flood and escape of water or oil
- Accidental damage to glass
- Employees’ effects
- Money, including assault cover if an employee were to be attacked during an attempted theft
- Business Interruption (“Loss of Profits” cover or “Increased Cost of Working”)
- Public Liability
- Employers’ Liability
- Legal Expenses
Cover can be added for computer breakdown and reinstatement of data.
There is always an excess under an office insurance policy – often £250. This means that the policyholder cannot claim for the first £250 of any loss for buildings or contents.
Examples of incidents that would be covered under an Office Insurance policy are as follows:
- A computer is knocked off a desk and broken. The policy would pay for repairs or for a replacement computer
- Thieves gain access to the office and steal equipment. This is covered under the theft section
- An employee suffers an electric shock from a faulty desk lamp. Compensation is payable under the Employers’ Liability cover
- A visitor to the office falls on the stairs and alleges that the company was negligent in failing to provide sufficient lighting. Any claim, whether valid or not, would be defended by insurers. It is the Public Liability section of the policy which covers such claims
- Following a fire at the office, the company has to relocate while the building is repaired and refurbished. The policy pays for items damaged in the fire and for the “increased cost of working” – the additional cost of hiring new premises and moving contents into and out of them
If your office is within your home, then a Working From Home insurance policy is likely to be more suitable.
