Shop Insurance
Shop Insurance provides a range of cover for shopkeepers:
- Accidental damage cover on shop buildings and/or contents, including theft; fire; lightning; explosion; aircraft; impact by vehicles, animals or falling trees; riot and civil commotion; malicious damage or vandalism; storm; flood and escape of water or oil
- Accidental damage to glass
- Employees’ effects
- Money, including assault cover if an employee were to be attacked during an attempted theft
- Goods in transit
- Deterioration of frozen food
- Business Interruption (“Loss of Profits” cover)
- Public Liability
- Products Liability
- Employers’ Liability
- Loss of Licence – where appropriate
- Legal Expenses
There is always an excess under a shop insurance policy – often £250. This means that the shopkeeper cannot claim for the first £250 of any loss for buildings or contents. Examples of incidents that would be covered under a Shop Insurance policy are as follows:
- A fire breaks out overnight and causes damage to stock. The cost of replacing the stock would be covered, as would the loss of trade for the period during which the business is closed
- A deep freezer fails during the night and the contents deteriorate. The policy would pay for the cost of replacing the stock
- The shopkeeper is going to the bank with the day’s takings when he is mugged. The policy would pay both for the lost money and it would provide a benefit to the injured shopkeeper in certain circumstances
- A customer falls over the step into the shop, breaks her arm and sues the shopkeeper. Such losses, where due to the negligence of the shopkeeper, would be covered under the Public Liability section of the shop insurance policy
- An employee is on a ladder putting away stock when it breaks and he falls, breaking his leg. He cannot work for 3 months. The policy will pay compensation to him under the Employers’ Liability section
- A water tank in the roof of the premises ruptures and the water damages stock. This would be covered under the terms of the policy
